Hunting Equipment in the UK: Planning for Threatening Conditions

Hunting Equipment – Priority #1: Secure a Shelter

Evaluate the area and find out if there is some shelter. If not, you’ll have to build one. The lean-to is a good basic shelter that’s easy to build. You just need to put a couple of strong uprights down in the ground and secure a cross member that connects them. This can be done with boot laces. Then set boughs or brushwood at an angle beside the cross member to make an angled roof. Thatch the roof using pine limbs or other supplies. Gather some fallen leaves or a handful of lengthened grass for a restful floor inside the shelter. Remember to attempt to sleep even if it is only a few hours. Sleep will give your mind more precision in thinking.

Hunting Equipment – Priority #2: Make a Fire

Go ahead and learn to build a fire even though you may not need one just yet. It takes some practice but can make the difference between life and death. Obtain a consistent procedure by which to start a fire, like condensed flint and steel, and always carry it with you.When you think you are going to have to stay all night in the bush, a good rule of thumb is to gather three times as much firewood as you think you’ll need.
